존엄하신 주권자시여, 전능하신 하나님 곧 모든 긍휼의 아버지께서 고귀하신 폐하를 보내시어 우리 영국 백성을 다스리고 통치하게 하셨사오니 그분께서 우리에게 베푸신 복은 참으로 크고 많다 하지 아니할 수 없습니다. 이는 서구 세계의 빛나는 별이시던 엘리자베스 여왕께서 우리에게 참으로 행복한 추억을 남기고 서거하신 후, 우리 나라의 안녕을 바라지 않는 많은 무리들이, 이제야말로 두텁고 짙은 어둠의 구름이 이 땅을 뒤덮어 사람들이 어디로 나아가야 할 지도 모르고 이 불안한 국가를 누가 다스리게 될 지도 모르고 방황하게 될 것이라고 기대하고 있던 바로 그 시점에, 폐하께서 힘찬 태양처럼 나타나사 그러한 모든 억측의 안개를 말끔히 일소하시고 그로 인하여 불안해하던 모든 사람들에게 넘치는 안위를 주셨기 때문입니다. 특히 확고한 칭호를 힘입어 폐하께서 세우신 정부와 폐하의 황태자를 우리가 바라볼 때 이 일이, 국내는 물론 국외에서도 평화와 안녕과 더불어 정착되었음을 알 수 있어 참으로 큰 안위가 됩니다.

Great and manifold were the blessings, most dread Sovereign, which Almighty God, the Father of all mercies, bestowed upon us the people of England, when first he sent Your Majesty's Royal Person to rule and reign over us. For whereas it was the expectation of many, who wished not well unto our Sion, that upon the setting of that bright Occidental Star, Queen Elizabeth of most happy memory, some thick and palpable clouds of darkness would so have overshadowed this Land, that men should have been in doubt which way they were to walk; and that it should hardly be known, who was to direct the unsettled State; the appearance of your Majesty, as the Sun in his strength, instantly dispelled those supposed and surmised mists, and gave unto all that were well affected exceeding cause of comfort; especially when we beheld the Government established in Your Highness, and Your hopeful Seed, by an undoubted Title, and this also accompanied with peace and tranquillity at home and abroad.

우리에게 많은 기쁨이 있지만 하나님의 거룩한 말씀이 계속해서 우리 가운데 선포될 수 있다는 복보다 우리 마음을 더 기쁘게 해 주는 것은 없습니다. 이 하나님의 말씀은 이 땅의 모든 부를 능가하는 가장 귀중한 보물이니, 이는 이 말씀에서 나오는 열매가 이 일시적인 세상에서 퍼져나갈 뿐만 아니라 또한 많은 사람들을 높은 하늘에 있는 저 영원한 행복으로 이끌기 때문입니다.

But among all our joys, there was no one that more filled our hearts, than the blessed continuance of the preaching of God's sacred Word among us; which is that inestimable treasure, which excelleth all the riches of the earth; because the fruit thereof extendeth itself, not only to the time spent in this transitory world, but directeth and disposeth men unto that eternal happiness which is above in heaven.

이 하나님의 말씀을 땅에 떨어뜨리지 아니하고, 오히려 고명(高名)하신 폐하의 전임자께서 물려주신 이 나라에서, 이 말씀을 붙들고 지속적으로 이어나가 그리스도의 진리를 유지하며 이를 원근 지방에 확산시키는 일에서, 사람들이 확신과 결의를 가지고 전진하는 것이야말로 폐하께 충성을 다하는 경건한 모든 백성의 마음과 폐하를 굳게 결합시켜 주는 원동력이라 하지 아니할 수 없습니다. 이로써 폐하의 존함이 모든 백성 가운데서 고귀하게 되며 그들이 위로 받는 가운데 폐하를 바라보고 폐하께서 하나님의 인도하심을 힘입어 백성들에게 참된 행복을 가져다 주는 창시자가 되시며 거룩한 일꾼이 되시도록 하나님께서 복을 허락하시기를 진심으로 바라게 될 것입니다.

Then not to suffer this to fall to the ground, but rather to take it up, and to continue it in that state, wherein the famous Predecessor of Your Highness did leave it: nay, to go forward with the confidence and resolution of a Man in maintaining the truth of Christ, and propagating it far and near, is that which hath so bound and firmly knit the hearts of all Your Majesty's loyal and religious people unto You, that Your very name is precious among them: their eye doth behold You with comfort, and they bless You in their hearts, as that sanctified Person who, under God, is the immediate Author of their true happiness.

실로 백성들의 이러한 만족은 줄어들거나 없어지지 않고 오히려 날마다 늘어나 힘을 얻고 있으니 이는 하나님의 집을 향한 폐하의 열심이 줄어들거나 차가워지지 않고 오히려 점점 더 뜨거워져서 기독교계의 저 먼 곳까지도 밝히 드러나고 있음을 그들이 직접 목격하고 있기 때문입니다. 폐하께서는 진리를 옹호하는 글을 쓰사 (그 글로 저 죄의 사람에게 치명타를 가해 회복 불능으로 만드셨으며) 또 날마다 집에서 경건하고 식견이 높은 연설을 하시고, 하나님의 집에 자주 들러 선포되는 말씀을 들으시며 그곳의 교사들을 위로해 주시고, 참으로 부드럽고 사랑이 많으사 양육하시는 아버지로서 교회를 돌보고 계심을 백성들은 잘 알고 있습니다.

And this their contentment doth not diminish or decay, but every day increaseth and taketh strength, when they observe, that the zeal of Your Majesty toward the house of God doth not slack or go backward, but is more and more kindled, manifesting itself abroad in the farthest parts of Christendom, by writing in defence of the Truth, (which hath given such a blow unto that man of sin, as will not be healed,) and every day at home, by religious and learned discourse, by frequenting the house of God, by hearing the Word preached, by cherishing the Teachers thereof, by caring for the Church, as a most tender and loving nursing Father.

폐하께서 이처럼 올바른 그리스도인으로서의 경건한 열정을 가지고 계심을 보여 주는 증거가 수없이 많지만 무엇보다도 이 성경 곧 우리 번역자들이 겸손하게 폐하께 바치는 성경을 완성하고 출판하시기 위해 지금까지 보여 주신 뜨겁고도 지속적인 열망을 다른 이들에게 알려 주는 것이야말로 가장 강력한 증거가 될 것입니다. 폐하께서는 사려 깊은 판단 하에 우리를 앞서간 훌륭한 분들이 우리말과 기타 다른 외국어로 이루어 놓은 여러 성경들을 비교해 가면서 거룩한 원어에서 더 정확한 성경을 영어로 번역하는 일이 꼭 필요하다고 느끼셨으며, 그 이후에는 그 작업을 맡은 사람들을 끊임없이 격려하시고 그 일이 신속히 진행되도록 촉구하셨고 이처럼 중요한 일에 마땅히 요구되는 매우 품위 있는 방식으로 그 번역 작업이 진행될 수 있게 은혜를 베풀어 주셨습니다.

There are infinite arguments of this right christian and religious affection in Your Majesty; but none is more forcible to declare it to others than the vehement and perpetuated desire of accomplishing and publishing of this work, which now with all humility we present unto Your Majesty. For when Your Highness had once out of deep judgment apprehended how convenient it was, that out of the Original Sacred Tongues, together with comparing of the labours, both in our own, and other foreign Languages, of many worthy men who went before us, there should be one more exact Translation of the holy Scriptures into the English Tongue; Your Majesty did never desist to urge and to excite those to whom it was commended, that the work might be hastened, and that the business might be expedited in so decent a manner, as a matter of such importance might justly require.

이제 우리는 하나님의 긍휼과 우리의 지속된 노력을 통하여 다음과 같은 결론을 내리게 되었습니다. 우리는 영국의 교회가 이 작업으로 말미암아 좋은 열매를 거두게 될 것을 크게 소망하면서 우리의 왕이시고 주권자시며 이 작업을 창시하시고 주관하신 폐하께 이 성경을 바치는 것이 우리의 의무라고 생각합니다. 지금까지의 여러 사례를 살펴볼 때 늘 이런 종류의 일이 나쁜 의도를 가지고 모든 일에 만족해하지 않는 사람들의 비난을 받아 왔지만, 우리는 폐하와 같이 식견이 높고 현명하신 군주께서 이 일을 인정하고 지원해 주시기를 감히 바라는 바입니다. 폐하께서 우리의 수고를 승인하고 받아 주시는 것이야말로 우리에게 큰 영예와 위로가 될 것이며 이로써 우리는 다른 사람들의 모함과 혹독한 비판으로 인해 좌절하지 않고 능히 그 모든 것을 이겨낼 것입니다.

And now at last, by the mercy of God, and the continuance of our labours, it being brought unto such a conclusion, as that we have great hopes that the Church of England shall reap good fruit thereby; we hold it our duty to offer it to Your Majesty, not only as to our King and Sovereign, but as to the principal Mover and Author of the work: humbly craving of Your most Sacred Majesty, that since things of this quality have ever been subject to the censures of illmeaning and discontented persons, it may receive approbation and patronage from so learned and judicious a Prince as Your Highness is, whose allowance and acceptance of our labours shall more honour and encourage us, than all the calumniations and hard interpretations of other men shall dismay us.

우리는 한편으로 국내외에서 교황의 추종자들에 의해 모함을 받을 것이며 그들은 우리에게 해악을 끼칠 것입니다. 이는, 그들이 하나님의 거룩한 진리를 무지와 암흑 속에 가두어 두기 원하지만, 우리가 부족하나마 하나님의 도구가 되어 하나님의 거룩한 진리를 사람들에게 더욱 더 널리 알리는 일을 수행하였기 때문입니다. 다른 한편으로 우리는 자만에 차서 자기들의 길만을 고집하는 형제들에게 중상모략을 당할 것입니다. 이들은 자기들이 직접 틀을 세우거나 만든 것이 아니면 그 어떤 것도 좋아하지 않는 사람들입니다. 그러할지라도 우리는 내적으로는 진리와 선한 양심의 순결함을 힘입어 굳건히 서서 주님 앞에서처럼 단순하고도 순전한 길들로 걸으며 평안히 거할 것이며 또 외적으로는 폐하의 은혜와 은총의 강력한 보호를 받아 굳건히 설 것입니다. 이같이 폐하께서 보호해 주시는 것이야말로 그리스도인으로서의 정직한 수고와 노력에 힘을 북돋아 주어 거친 비판과 무자비한 비난을 이겨 내게 하는 원동력이 될 것입니다.

So that if, on the one side, we shall be traduced by Popish Persons at home or abroad, who therefore will malign us, because we are poor instruments to make God's holy Truth to be yet more and more known unto the people, whom they desire still to keep in ignorance and darkness; or if, on the other side, we shall be maligned by self-conceited Brethren, who run their own ways, and give liking unto nothing, but what is framed by themselves, and hammered on their anvil; we may rest secure, supported within by truth and innocency of a good conscience, having walked the ways of simplicity and integrity, as before the Lord; and sustained without by the powerful protection of Your Majesty's grace and favour, which will ever give countenance to honest and christian endeavours against bitter censures and uncharitable imputations.

하늘과 땅의 주께서 많은 행복한 날로 폐하께 복을 주시고 자신의 천상(天上)의 손을 펴사 놀랍고도 비상한 은혜로 폐하를 부요하게 하셔서 이 마지막 때에 참된 행복과 지고한 복락으로 인해 온 세상이 놀라는 기묘자가 되게 하시기를 바라오며, 이로써 이 일이 우리의 주님이시요, 유일한 구원자이신 예수 그리스도를 통해 위대하신 하나님의 영광과 그분의 교회에 유익이 되기를 간구하는 바입니다.

The Lord of heaven and earth bless Your Majesty with many and happy days, that, as his heavenly hand hath enriched Your Highness with many singular and extraordinary graces, so You may be the wonder of the world in this latter age for happiness and true felicity, to the honour of that great GOD, and the good of his Church, through Jesus Christ our Lord and only Saviour.
